K-beauty has a reputation for ten-step routines, and honestly, that scares a lot of people off. Here's the good news: you don't need ten steps. You need a few good basics, used consistently. This is the simple routine I recommend to anyone just getting started.
Step 1: Cleanse
Start with a gentle cleanser that doesn't leave your skin feeling tight or squeaky. That squeaky feeling usually means it's stripping more than it should. If you wear sunscreen or makeup, many people like to double cleanse at night: an oil cleanser first to melt everything off, then a water-based one. Browse our Cleansers to find one that fits your skin.
Step 2: Tone
In K-beauty, toner isn't the harsh, alcohol-heavy stuff some of us grew up with. Most Korean toners are hydrating and feel almost like water. You can pat it in with your hands right after cleansing. Find a few options in Toners.
Step 3: Serum or essence
This is where you treat whatever you care about most, whether that's hydration, glow, dark spots or texture. If you're new, pick one and stick with it for a few weeks before adding anything else, so you can tell what's actually working. Our Serums & Essences collection is a good place to explore.
Step 4: Moisturize
Even oily skin needs moisture. A lighter gel cream works well if you get shiny, and a richer cream is lovely for dry skin, especially in winter. Take a look at our Moisturizers.
Step 5: Sunscreen (mornings)
If you only add one thing to your routine, make it sunscreen. Korean and Japanese sunscreens are known for feeling light and wearing nicely under makeup, which makes it a lot easier to wear one every day. Check out the Sunscreen collection, and read our sunscreen guide if you're not sure where to start.
Nice-to-haves
Once the basics feel easy, you can have fun with extras:
- Face Masks once or twice a week for a little boost.
- Eye Care if you want something just for the under-eye area.
- Lip Care to keep lips soft, especially in cold weather.
Don't want to piece it together?
The K-Beauty Cult Favorites Starter Set ($91.99) and the Glass-Skin Glow Routine ($110.99) take the guesswork out. You can find all our sets in Bundles & Sets.
A couple of reminders
- Introduce new products one at a time, and patch test if your skin is sensitive.
- Give a product a few weeks before you decide whether it works for you.
- If you have a skin condition or something isn't sitting right, check with a dermatologist.
That's it. Five steps, nothing complicated. Your skin will thank you for being consistent more than for owning every product out there.
